On February 6th, 2018 we had just returned home from a trip and knew our little "gift" would be in the mail. You know, the BIG white envelope from Salt Lake with information on the inside that would be life changing. Yup, that's the one!
We had been traveling for over 20 hours and it was 4:30 in the afternoon by the time we got home and there was NO WAY I was waiting until the next day. We gathered at 6:15pm to open the call. Joe is "Mr. Adventure" so I don't think he was feeling anything but excitement and anticipation. Me on the other hand, felt excitement mixed with a little nausea and a whole lot of fear.
Joe started to open the packet, which seemed like it took forever. My daughter Chelsea lives in New York so she was Face-timed in so she could see/hear as well. He started to read the letter and I didn't want to look at it because I know me, and I would have just jumped to the bottom line.
Assignment: HONG KONG, 18 months, Member and Leader Support
Here was the catch: We were not assigned to leave until July 30th, 2018. Almost 6 months to wait. While I was relieved the call was Hong Kong as well as the assignment, I was rattled by the length of time to wait. I needed time to process my feelings so I wanted to wait a few days before we made the big announcement to the world.
I couldn't shake the feeling that the timing was not right. I prayed and prayed, concerned that maybe I was just trying to control the situation and really wanted to do the right thing. I decided to call the missionary department and just asked a few questions, sharing that we were ready and willing and that I knew that the Lord makes the calls but the missionary department does a lot. I also shared that we were willing to go when it was right but that if Hong Kong wanted us sooner we were available. They contacted the powers that be in Hong Kong and were told that as soon as we could get our visas to "come on down" and there was no reason to wait. YES! Our date was moved up seven weeks and is now June 11th, 2018.
This is really happening!
(Soon to be)
